We worked on his obedience (specifically Down, Stay and Come) and he made progress on all of it. Down is a struggle for him and he gets pouty but he does it if you make him. He is a sweet guy who really works that cute Weimaraner face and tries to "cute" his way out of work sometimes. But if you don't fall for it he really does try to get the answer right. Tomorrow we are doing more of the same and working on his leash manners. It is the hope to wean him off of his pinch collar soon. Whether or not it happens his week depends on him and how well he responds to his remote with big distractions around.
Smokey did such a good job today. He wore his collar all day today and only needed a few reminders not to surf the counters. He also stayed on Place for almost an hour today with toddler and husband coming and going and other dogs milling around.

Jax had a weird day today. I'm not sure why (I'm thinking it was the cold and wind) but he did not want to do -anything- outside today. He was super squirrelly and flighty the entire time. We did not take the leash off today because he just wasn't ready. On the other hand, he was very good in the house. He stayed on Place for 45-50 minutes with normal activity and distractions in the room. He held a down stay during lunch and didn't even attempt to eat the Cheerios the baby threw on the ground. I also left bread and cheese on the countertops and left the room and spied on him with the monitor and he did a fine job. He sulked and looked but did not approach the counter.
Tomorrow we may try again to get that leash off. I know he can do it! Who remembers Smokey the Weimaraner? He is back for a week to get some additional obedience training and to work on some house manners. He is pretty naughty about counter surfing.
Smokey was introduced to his remote trainer today and took to it quickly and naturally. He fell for some counter traps and the mild correction from the collar worked great. He will still need reminders, I'm sure but for now he seems to be getting it. We also introduced Down and its corresponding Implied Stay. He did so-so on it. More to work on tomorrow! Jax is back! He is here to complete his off-leash training. He had a relaxing weekend at home and was apparently not keen on getting back to work so soon because while his mom was dropping off his stuff this morning he promptly locked himself, and her keys, in her running car. Luckily a locksmith was able to free him quickly and Jax enjoyed the attention.
During our workouts today it was clear that Jax remembers everything and is ready to move on. I hope to get him to the farm Tuesdat or Wednesday for his first off-leash work out. Welcome back, Jax! Jax had a very busy day today. He was my little helper today in most of my lessons. He did a very good job though he got chilly at one point and did not want to hold a Down on the cold ground.
He worked around both big and small dogs and was very well behaved. We also gave him some time off-leash after the lessons were over just to romp and enjoy some freedom. He is a little bit of a scaredy cat and so he would startle at something new and bolt back to me but I think he enjoyed it for the most part. We will work towards Jax holding his focus while off-leash tomorrow and next week. He is coming along nicely and I am proud of him. Such a smart and sensetive pup. Took my little beagle buddy on a long walk today to see if we could spot any "volunteers" to distract him with. He is still learning about corrections and it is difficult because he is either being vocal because he sees another dog or he is being vocal because he is back talking about his corrections. But by the end of the walk he was able to walk past dogs barking behind a chain link fence without any carrying on.
His Autosit isn't really there yet but more work on it tomorrow. He isn't pulling at all anymore so that is a little victory on its own. Tomorrow he and I are going to try going Down Town for a better chance of passing leashed dogs and runners or cyclists. It will be an interesting walk, that's for sure! Today Jax and I worked some more on the basics. He is such a sweet fellow but he stresses himself out if he gets corrected and is confused about how to get the answer right so we are taking it slow. He is already used to wearing his remote collar so we use it in the house especially to work on his manners. He has been pretty good about not outright thieving but he is watchful and will take advantage of dropped or ignored food. Luckily we have been able to correct him before he rewards himself every time except for a few toddler-dropped Cheerios.
Tomorrow I hope to make some real progress on his obedience work and move him closer to off-leash. How can you not love a beagle? It's no secret that I adore this breed and love working with them. Luigi is a sweet little beagle boy who is here to spend a few days learning not to be an absolute fool on his leash. He thinks he is a brave boy who can bark and lunge at passers by while on a walk. Our task this week is to teach him that it looks much more impressive to walk quietly like a gentleman and not scream at innocent people.
Today we introduced him to a prong collar, which is more humane, safer, and ultimately more comfortable than a slip chain collar and he is nice and sensitive to it which means that if we are fair and time our corrections well this should be a very effective tool for communicating with him while using the smallest correction possible. Right now Luigi is in his kennel, snuggling with his blanket and being cute in general. Jax is a sweet and young pitbull terrier who is here for 2 weeks of advanced training as well as working on some house manners. Jax is an expert counter surfer and food stealer. He is a bright boy though and he learns quickly.
Today we got him settled in and revisited some of the training he has already received during preliminary individual training. He spent today soliciting love and affection from everyone from the toddler to me to the grumpy shepherd who wants nothing to do with him. He doesn't care. Jax just wants friends. Tomorrow we are going to push his obedience to some new commands and we are going to have our first patience exercise about food. I am looking forward to spending some time with this sweetie and helping him learn how to better make his mom proud. |
