Tomorrow we are going to continue laying her foundation and we will hopefully move to the long line in a day or two. The long line is a transitional tool used to help them learn self restraint when they have more freedom. Ginger is doing just fine for day 2 and she is making smooth progress. She is such a sweet girl!
Our internet is very spotty tonight so we are keeping blogs kind of short. Ginger had a great day today. We introduced the rest of her commands and she is settling in nicely. Her Heel work was going so well I decided to walk her past a strange dog and after a couple corrections she was willing to walk next to, past, and behind him without a fight, though she did glance over her shoulder often. She is a nervous nelly around other dogs but has shown zero aggression towards her neighbor or the other dog we worked with today. She even invited Ace to play!

Keeping the blog short today as our internet keeps blinking out.
We are moving Wallace to the long line tomorrow so that he can practice holding his commands while I move farther away from him. He is fairly responsive for most of his commands though he still toils when it comes to staying appropriate in the Heel. His Down is pretty good and his Come can best be described as enthusiastic. But he has the right attitude and just needs to build his skills a little. Today he got to help me with one of my lessons. We needed a friendly distraction and Wallace was very accommodating. He behaved himself around the other dog and seemed to enjoy being so important. More than happy with where this boy is on day 2. Sweet Ginger is here for 10 days of advanced obedience training. She is a gentle natured but anxious bully-type dog whose anxiety is causing some behavior problems like over-reacting when strange dogs are around and poor leash manners. She enjoys people and would love very much to just be scooped up and carried around, while simultaneously playing a game of rough-and-tumble. We will be introducing her to the pack slowly to allow us to work with her around dogs she doesn't know. However, she has already become friendly with her neighbor, Wallace, who is in the kennel next to her.
Today we introduced Heel/Autosit and Down. She seems to have a grasp of some of the words, though she isn't sure how or isn't always interested in following direction. She likes to try to cute her way out of doing things by pawing, flirting, and smiling and just being silly instead of working. With well timed correction coupled with calm praise she is learning how to get the attention she wants appropriately. Her praise has to be calm because excited praise tends to send her into a fit of the sillywiggles and it halts productivity. I always enjoy teaching the bully breeds. They are always game for fun and team work with people. Welcome Ginger! Dapper Wallace is here for 10 days of advanced obedience training. He is a big, happy-go-lucky boy who has already made fast friends with Ace and Kylie. He tried being friends with Ted but Ted just wanted to lay in the grass. Maybe tomorrow he will feel like playing.
Wallace has some obedience training under his belt already so he knows a few commands. A big goal for him is going to be getting him transitioned to his remote trainer so that he can enjoy some more freedom while giving his owner the tools to allow him to play without a physical leash while still complying with the leash law and keeping Wallace safe. Wallace has settled in nicely with his neighbor, Ginger in the next kennel. I am looking forward to my week with this big guy and helping him reach his owner's goals of having more control while giving him more freedom. Tomorrow we are working on cleaning up all of his commands and making sure he understands what is expected of him. We are going to focus on his Heel work because his leash manners (though he knows better) are leaving something to be desired. This guys is happy to please and likes being with people so he should be fun to work with. Welcome Wallace! |
