Bear Board and Train day 3

2/3/2013

Bear had a great day today. We got to start off leash with the Dogtra and he did reasonably well with it. His radius training is going fine. His recall still needs work but only once did I have an issue in getting him back. We were walking back to the house from our walk and Angela the kitty got spooked and ran in front of us. Bear started chasing him and he went into predator mode. That means his ears basically shut off and he wouldn't hear me even if I screamed at him. I had to turn his collar up to stop him from running and when I stimmed him with the collar he yelped and looked around, clearly surprised to find me still standing back where he left me. Why didn't I chase the cat to? He trotted back to me, looking appropriately ashamed of himself. The rest of the way back to the house he was an angel. When we got back to the training room I had him say hello to Angela again but politely this time.
I am pleased I was able to remove the leash today. His obedience is making progress but he still needs work. He has the Heel/Autosit down except he as a funny habit when I stop of walking 2 feet in front of me and sitting with his back facing me. I think this is just a lack of focus and he doesn't realize I stopped in time. He does down really well and his Recall is so-so. When he understands that I want him to come back he bounds up to me and sits down just fine. Sometimes he acts like he can't even hear me (of course, he can but I wonder how well he knows his name?). He just needs practice.
Tomorrow we are going to do Down from the Front and work on Implied Stay some more, he still isn't getting that one very well.  I hope to be able to do Place with him tomorrow also.
He sure does like Piper. They played for a solid hour last night without stopping. Then he laid down with his legs out behind him like a frog and smiled at her. Very cute!
