Jersey Board and Train day 5

It has been a big couple of days for our friend Jersey. We have fully introduced him to his remote collar and have started using it for his obedience. He still needs a leash at the moment but he is on track for off-leash soon. We need to make sure his recall is as solid as possible, with little-to-no bolting tendencies before we let him work with no fences and no leashes. In the yard without a leash he is so-so. His Heel is still fairly sloppy when we don't use a leash but he is getting better. He threw a bit of a tantrum about Down earlier today but after some play time and a nap he did it perfectly multiple times in a row.
He gets very excited when he gets the answer right and sometimes this leads to him being a bit over zealous and silly so we try very hard to praise him calmly to help him keep his composure and not celebrate too much.
He has settled in nicely now and enjoys playing with Ace, the pitbull. He has been very calm and gentle around the baby, and all in all, a polite house guest. Jersey is a fun dog. I am pleased with his progress so far and looking forward to letting him enjoy some time off the leash soon.

Jersey is doing fine. He spent some time in his remote collar today and he is fairly sensitive to it which is always convenient. Because he is still acting a little timid I did not do much heavy obedience with him in his remote today because I don't want to scare him with an unfamiliar correction but we did do his obedience work today in his pinch collar (which offers a familiar correction) and he did great. He is showing improvement in all of his commands and he is retaining things well.
Today I had 3 friends over for dinner and we practiced him holding a (very wiggly) sit while being greeted by friendly strangers. He only tried to jump up twice and even though he didn't quite settle, he did restrain himself. Practice will make perfect with this kind of interaction and so we will continue to work on it. The easiest way to practice politely greeting people is to walk downtown and I hope the weather clears up enough during out workout times over the next couple days to allow us to go for a walk on Mass st.
Jersey is stretched out in the kitchen right now, snoring loudly and having some sort of dream. Clearly he isn't worried about very much at the moment and I hope that his deep sleep means he is starting to feel safe and comfortable here. He has really come out of his shell today and that makes me happy. More updates tomorrow but everything is moving in the right direction for Jersey.

Jersey is settling right in and learning fast. He had a couple of really positive work outs today and we were able to introduce Heel/Autosit, Implied Stay, Come and Down. He still needs lots of practice and reassurance but he is starting to learn the words we will need him to know.
He still is being a little guarded around the other dogs (meaning he is not really playing yet) but he is able to relax around the house and he likes to follow Kylie, the alpha dog, around. Probably he feels she is the safest one and she is also not at all interested in him so there's no pressure to play or be pals like there is with my younger dog who really wants to play with him.
He impressed me today with how much he seemed to enjoy working and I think he is going to be a lot of fun to work with as his training moves on. Tomorrow we are going to push more of what he was introduced to today and build his reliability with those commands I am also going to introduce Placemat in the evening while we have some house guests over. My last plan for tomorrow is to introduce him to his remote collar. I won't use it for obedience yet but I will get him used to wearing it and use it to address any rude behavior when my guests arrive.
Jersey is doing great and I think tomorrow will be a fun day, even if we end up working inside to avoid rain. For now, he is snoozing in his crate, hopefully processing his day.

Jersey the Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier arrived today for two weeks of advanced obedience training. He is a healthy and energetic young dog who can sometimes be hyper. Leash manners are a big struggle for this guy and so that is where we will start out.
Today he was acting very timid and unsure of himself and so we let him take the day to aclimafe and get used to the new surroundings and dogs. We did some very basic work but mostly just let him explore and get comfortable. The real work will start on Tuesday with the Heel, Autosit, and Implied Stay. If that goes smoothly we will also do Down but only if he isn't acting overworked.
I already am enjoying having this guy around and he has been a polite house guest. I look forward to helping him harness all of his terrier energy.

Bear is doing great. He had a more confident off-leash lesson today where he only toiled a little with Heel. His Come command, Down, Implied Stay, and Automatic Sit are all fairly solid. I hope to get him downtown on Mass Street before he goes home if I have time, just to really proof his distraction level.
Tonight we had 3 friends over for dinner and he stayed on his Placemat all evening (after greeting our guests when they arrived). He only needed one or two reminders of what he was supposed to be doing.
Tomorrow we are pushing Heelwork again and we are going to try to start getting some good video of him for his go-home lesson.
I am enjoying training this guy very much and I can already tell I will miss him when he goes home. He is a fun worker and even though he is pretty independent he enjoys training working with people. He can get pouty about corrections but he recovers quickly. He was a very polite host tonight for our guests and was happy to have them come and visit him on his mat and enjoyed their attention but he did not crowd anyone or jump up. A very good evening for him indeed.

Bear had an interesting day today. We had a lot of fun at the farm and he did well with his radius training, recall, Down and Implied Stay. However, his off-leash Heel command was tough for him. Tougher than it has been in town. He eventually got it but he toiled with staying on my left side and keeping up with me.
He also had a bit of a puppy moment when we were in a Heel and he darted into the woods after a turkey. He came right back after a minute but he did not turn right around and come back but instead trotted down a short path and out of the trees via the path of least resistance (instead of breaking through the underbrush). I can't decide if this was defiance or intelligence so I am giving him credit for both. But he did show us that he will take a correction when there is a big distraction but a "continuous" correction will turn him around when a normal tap won't. I will go over these collar modes with his owner but it simply means that in a very distracting setting he does better with a correction that lasts longer (a few seconds) instead of one that is extremely high.
All in all he had a good day. Tomorrow we are having some guides over for dinner and so we will take that time to practice his Down/Stay and Placemat. More heelwork is also in order.

Bear is doing great. He is responsive and reliable with his remote on. I've decided that since tomorrow is a light day for me lesson-wise, that Bear and I are going to go for a hike at the farm to really tire him out and test his off-leash recall as well as the rest of his training.
What he really needs over the next few days is proofing and work on his implied stays. He stays well so far but he is obviously waiting on the edge of his seat for his next command and he is a bit hair trigger. If I move across the room he has a tendency to jump up, expecting me to need him or want him to follow me. So we will work on his ability to stay still and quiet until I actually need him. This is a difficult thing for puppies but as he grows up it will become easier for him.
Could not be happier with where Bear is right now. He is doing a fine job.

Bear has done well so far this weekend. He has had a few off-leash workouts and he is nice and responsive to commands. He still needs guidance with the Heel command or else he will slowly glide too far in front. But he tries hard. We have not done any off-leash in town yet but we are working on a 20' line until he shows us he is very reliable on a sidewalk. He is very close though and I think we will get there early this week.
For now Bear is relaxing on Placemat. He keeps trying to pull on a string in the corner of his bed but if he has a bone he is pretty good at parking it for me.
He is making steady progress and is right on track for where we want him. He is a fun dog to have around.

Bear Board and Train day 6

I'm afraid our friend Bear had a bit of a boring day today. I was absolutely slammed all afternoon with weekly lessons and so he got some extra play time and house time but he didn't get much work done in the afternoon. What we did do this morning was pretty good. He got a walk on-leash and did well. It was a quiet morning and so the distractions weren't a big issue for him so he was able to focus and listen well. We also did some off-leash work in a fenced area and his stationary commands (sit, down,) are great. His motion commands like Heel are still works in progress without a leash but we have plenty of time to work. His recall with his remote is improving very quickly and he hardly ever blows off that command anymore.
Luckily tomorrow I will have more time tomorrow to really work him out. I am also going to take him to the farm for the first time tomorrow to work on a long-line out in the country with no fence. I am excited for him and I think he will enjoy the animals and all new distractions out there.
Right now he is in his crate enjoying a Nylabone that he stole from Ace's horde in the yard. He has been a very polite houseguest so far.

We switched focus today to off-leash obedience. I had an unexpected opening next week and so Bear's owners decided to take advantage of it and get him going on his remote collar. I used one of my schooling collars on him today and he adapted very well and quite quickly. He was a little confused about Heel and he still had the impulse to bolt around and try to beat the corrections but as soon as he realized that he couldn't outrun them he became must more responsive to command.
I am ordering his collar tonight and going to start really pushing him tomorrow to get him where we need to be for next week. I am excited to see how far we can take him before his time with us is finished.
