we are almost ready for proofing mode where we increase distractions and ask more of him. I just want to clean up his Down command a little more. I’m very pleased with his progress.
Sonny is coming right along. His motion commands are great. Stationary commands make sense to him but it’s hard to sit still. But his patience is getting better and better. His focus stamina is also improving but his favorite thing to do is run. He could run all day and the collar gives him so much freedom. Watching him run in the field is a real treat.

Sonny is making good progress. We did his obedience today half on/half off-leash and he only toiled with Down a little. Other than that he got everything right. He has been good about respecting boundaries and being polite around the small children.
Tomorrow I am going to take him up to the high pasture to stretch his legs and after he tuckers out I will do an off-leash heel all the way back to the house, hopefully. tomorrow or Wednesday I also plan on pushing his placemat time up to an hour. Patience and self restraint aren’t always easy but he is getting there! Kids running around definitely makes it harder but he is up to the challenge. He hasn’t bucked at any of the tasks I’ve set for him so far. Such a good guy. Keeping it short tonight!
Friday was a fun day for Sonny. We did all of his work with his remote. No more prong collar! He got a little bit of off-leash play time with the other dogs and we did some shirt off-leash heel exercises. Today I’m afraid was a bit boring for him as I was in KC for the bulk of the day but tomorrow we are back to work and I hope to work on his Come command at a longer distance without his leash on. He is really enjoying some leg stretching time! Sonny was introduced to his remote collar today. He is pretty sensitive so he uses a nice low level which gives us lots of room to raise his correction if he gets really distracted. We mostly worked on his come command on a 30’ line and he did really well. His other commands were all run through to get him used to the remote’s correction during things he knows well.
It was a really productive day and he worked really hard. Tomorrow we will see if he is ready for some off leash play time but if he needs more practice we have plenty of time. He is doing great. Sonny is a young, spirited, Brittany who is here for two weeks of advanced obedience training. He arrived early this morning and he is off to a great start. We started the day with a recall exercise to start laying the foundation for the Come command and throughout the day we refreshed the basic obedience he was introduced to in a couple of individual lessons.
So far we have introduced Heel with an Automatic Sit, Implied Stay, Come, and Down at the left side. He has taken everything in stride and has been a calm and sensitive pupil. I hope to introduce him to his remote nice and early because his owner plans to hunt with him and so reliability off the leash is very important to him. i anticipate this will be a fun couple weeks. Bird dogs like Sonny are bright and fun to work with and they enjoy learning. Welcome Sonny! Winston had a sort of boring day today. My Saturday got busy with family stuff so he got a long walk and play time (he got stung by a bee! All is fine but he doesn’t like the garden so much anymore) and practice with the Come command but not as much obedience practice as normal. But tomorrow I should be able to work him as usual and so we won’t be off-track. Sometimes a day of relaxed fun (bees no longer invited) can be a nice recharge for a dog who works so hard as Winston.
I bet he is ready to go tomorrow morning with his jobs again. Sweet Sailor goes home tomorrow. I’m proud of and impressed by how far she has come. She is a sweet girl who will mature into a wonderful dog once her impulsive puppyhood is over. She still gets in trouble for over celebrating but she is easier to control now than ever.
The task now is going to be teaching and supporting her people in maintaining her training and helping her grow in her new obedient lifestyle. I know she will do great. One of my favorite days is the day we take the leash off of my advanced clients for the first time. There is always this burst of energy where they think I made a mistake or somehow they got free then they realize I’m not trying to corral them and they are actually allowed to be frolicking and then the real play begins. Winston has a blast zooming around the yard today with Ace. His Come command was very good other than having some “bad brakes” (he ran into me) a couple times. We still did his obedience workouts with his leash on but no prong collar! We will be removing his leash during work as well as play time as early as tomorrow afternoon. I’m proud of Winston. He was a very happy Schnauzer today.
Proud of young Sailor today. She had a perfect workout this afternoon. She did all of her commands without a single correction. She still has some maturing to do but she doesn’t need to rush that with how hard she is working. She is such a good pup and she is a goofball to work with. Her Down commands usually start as a play bow! Her enthusiasm is a strength and my goal is to keep her training fun for her so that it becomes her way of life quickly and happily. She is such a fun class clown that’s for sure.
He’s baaaaaaack! Who remembers Winston? The sweet giant schnauzer boy is back for another week to complete his training. When he was just a little over for months old he stayed with me for a week of basic obedience and now that he is older and ready he is back to complete his final week of advanced obedience. We will use this week to introduce and condition him to a remote collar and get him reliable when he isn’t wearing a physical leash.
Today was mostly review to see what we need to clean up in his basic stuff before we introduce him to his new collar but the real work begins tomorrow. This is a smart boy so I anticipate he will enjoy his new work and meet expectations pretty easily. Welcome back Winston! |
