Betty is a cute, chocolate, Standard Poodle who is full of energy and happy-go-lucky attitude. To quote her mom, she gets a little "goosey" around other large dogs. She invited them to play and chase but then when they actually chase her she becomes frightened. Ace, our pitbull, is so helpful in circumstances because he will adapt his playing style to fit whoever will be his trying to befriend. He helped to welcome her into the pack out here and while she is still a little put off by Kylie, who LOVES to chase other dogs and barks with her big booming voice. But in the house they are getting along just fine.
Betty already has some obedience under her belt but she has no self-restraint and very little reliability. That is my task over the next 10 days, to give her that self-restraint in the form of an Implied Stay with all commands and to get her to understand that she must comply with all given commands even if there is something "better" to do.
Today was all about settling in and getting to know the other dogs out here. Tomorrow the real work begins and it will start with finding out where exactly her obedience is and what needs to be tweaked and perfected before we move on to the shock collar. Welcome Betty!
