Ripley and Ruby Board and Train day 5

We had so much fun today. We took the leashes off and the pups enjoyed some bouncing and pouncing in the yard. They seem to be adapting well to their remote trainers and are enjoying their new freedom. Their recall is very solid and they stay within earshot of me and stop when I tell them they are going too far (indeed Ripley will pelt back to me at impressive speeds if I tell him he is going too far away from me).
Their obedience is so/so without leashes on. They aren't as organized and can get a little sloppy but remember, they have been off-leash for one day. When I tell Ruby to lay down she will do it but she must first wiggle around and lay down behind me. Ripley will sit but then will dramatically flop over and wiggle his little feet at me. Heel is possible off-leash if they are not with each other and only for about 20 feet before they get distracted. But baby steps are being taken. It takes more repetitions for an action to become a habit for little dogs like this who weren't bred for hard work and so we will keep practicing and they will get better every day. It is important that their owners continue to practice when they go home.
For now they are curled up in a cuddle puddle on some pillows that the baby dragged onto the ground. Kids and dogs, ever partners in crime.
