I've been so frustrated with my blog host this weekend because I've had the cutest and most charming Giant Schnauzer puppy here and I haven't been able to post a single update about him because my editor kept crashing.
Winston is a very puppy puppy. He is still very distractible and funny and playful and at his tender age he is allowed to be that way.
That said! He has done a wonderful job of learning his commands and he has worked so so hard to get the answers right. He still sometimes gets overcome with the sillies and tries to turn the Down command into a bouncy play bow but he will do it if you make him even if he would rather tease you into playing.
He has learned Heel/Autosit, Down, Come, Stay, and Placemat. He knew Sit when he got here and that's still a good, solid word for him. The important thing for him is that his handler needs to both keep a sense of humor but also maintain discipline. We don't want him to learn that he doesn't have to do what he is told. He already has a habit of back talking when he doesn't get his way and so we don't want to indulge that at as he grows up. If we tell him to sit, he must sit down even if he is being a pouty cutie pie. He can get all the affection he wants once he does what he was asked to do.
At his maturity level he isn't capable of a long Implied Stay but that should get easier for him as he gets a little older. He has stayed on his placemat with just a few reminders for about an hour so far and I'm pleased with that. He is sensitive to the word no and he hears it well. He definitely knows what it means!
He is going to want to have a rigorous roughhousing play session when he gets home tomorrow because this poor guy has been on a 6' leash for a week! But my guess is that he is gonna zoom around for a while and then pass out and have a good long nap, which he deserves. He has been a blast to train and a joy to have around the house. I am looking forward to his follow ups once he settles in at home. Such a silly guy.
